Patrick Madison is a combat disabled veteran of the Vietnam War.
While an urban planning student in college I became interested in the stained glass work of Frank Lloyd Wright. His light screens, as he called them, illuminated his interiors with natural light touched by dashes of color, and animated by interesting visual geometries.
Similarly, in my own work I attempt to create pieces using hand-cast art glass that emphasizes natural light. I believe through the medium of clear glass the interaction of color and natural light properly composed is both beautiful and inspirational.
As a self-taught stained glass artist I’ve enjoyed the freedom to experiment with other styles and methods. An example would be the technique of layering stained glass pieces called “plating,” developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany over 100 years ago to create depth, contour, and shadows. I also use smaller pieces of stained glass as the background canvas for miniature acrylic paintings.
