Photography isn’t simply her vocation; it’s her way of life. Interpreting the world around her through the art she creates from the world around her is a passion – one she’s had for nearly 40-years.
Her talent was initially noticed while serving as a Photographer’s Mate in the U.S. Navy. In 1983, she was selected by a portfolio review to attend the prestigious Military Photojournalism Program at Syracuse University. The
program is a year-long course of study in photography, writing, graphics as well as publication design.
Upon graduation from Syracuse, she became one of the Navy’s elite visual creators. She traveled to Europe, The Mediterranean, The Amazon and Central America — photographing the people and operations of the U.S. Navy. After nearly 10 years of service, Joan left the Navy to pursue photography in civilian life.
