David Joyner is a United States Navy veteran.
An inability to sit still and a love of animals began my journey through art. I was an awkward kid with awful handwriting. I was made fun of constantly for this. The worse my penmanship became however, the better my drawing ability. I began by reproducing other artist’s drawings. Then it dawned on me to attempt one of my own from a photograph. It worked! I gradually gained more confidence, advancing to portraits and more difficult animals. I have taught myself through books and the internet but, mainly through a lot of mistakes. Erasers were my friend. I grew to love a white sheet of sketch paper and a sharpened pencil. Anything is possible in that world. My mother taught me this. No matter what happened in life, I would always be safe at my drawing table. My handwriting is still illegible. I have continued to learn through stray pencil marks, hand cramps, and spilled paint. To this day, I am amazed at a white sheet of paper.I live in Okeechobee, Florida with my beautiful wife Sally, Olivia, 10 and, Bradley, 16. I owe this all to my mother who told an 8 year old boy, I believe you can draw.
